When designing documents for variable print, use Adobe InDesign to layout the final document. Build your images in Photoshop or Illustrator so you can place fewer images into InDesign. Images should be flattened before being placed into InDesign, but please send layered art with your final files as well. All variable text must be created in InDesign. Think of making the leanest endfile possible.

  4. Is variable mail just something with my address on it?Go To Top Of Page
No. Mail that is simply addressed to you is generic mail. What makes mail variable is the relevancy of the message and images contained within. If a mailpiece has been tailor made to be relevant for you specifically, it is variable mail.
  5. What is a personalized URL?Go To Top Of Page
A personalized URL is a personalized website used for marketing and data collection which can be used in future marketing campaigns. The site usually greets the visitor by name and presents them with products, services and information based on a database of preferences. The site can be an on-going campaign that changes depending on the data collected from the visitor or the site can be used as a one-time marketing announcement for registration purposes. A personalized URL consists of two parts: the first and last name of the recipient and a campaign specific domain name, e.g., JohnSample.domain.com. The Keiger Direct personalized URL system is part of LYNX•Web.
  6. Can Keiger Direct print PURLs?Go To Top Of Page

  11. What is web-to-print?Go To Top Of Page
Web-to-print is called Web2Print, W2P or remote publishing. This system allows customers to go to a website and place an order for printed pieces, which is particularly helpful for those without a strong graphic design background. The Keiger Direct web-to-print system is part of Direct on Demand. With the Direct on Demand web-to-print system, we make it easy for our customers to order customized company documents such as business cards and letterhead and also allow our customers to brand the appearance of the web pages with which they interact. For example, the web pages for the system can have a company's logo, name, address and phone number, as well as the company's colors.

Marketing

  1. Is it more efficient and effective for me to consult with you at the beginning of a desired personalized URL campaign if I have multiple aspects to launch?Go To Top Of Page
Yes. Keiger Direct will help you more effectively plan your entire campaign. For example, with a multiple aspect campaign we would help you set it up so that you could cost efficiently load your data as you need it. Also, for development purposes, we would be able to assist you with building all areas of your campaign up front and those areas can then be used when the time comes for the next aspect of your campaign.
  2. How will a personalized URL campaign increase my direct mail marketing response rate?Go To Top Of Page
By incorporating personalized URLs into your direct mail marketing rather than sending your prospects to the usual web page that you might direct them to, you can send them to a completely customized page that is personalized just for them and contains their own names and a message that has been tailored specifically for them. Their customized page will not truly exist until they go to it, and people are a lot more likely to respond to their own names and to information tailored just for them. Additionally, personalized URLs are an extremely useful way to track how your prospect is responding to your communications. The Keiger Direct personalized URL system is part of LYNX•Web.
  3. Isn't 1-to-1 marketing expensive?Go To Top Of Page
We always review projects with cost per response in mind. Sometimes it is appropriate to blanket a group with the same static data. LYNX campaigns, on the other hand, are targeted and customized to get a much higher response rate which increases campaign ROI. If you examine expenses from the perspective of cost per response, you will find that LYNX campaigns are more economical than static campaigns.
  4. How can I learn more about personalized marketing in a sales-free environment?Go To Top Of Page
Attend one of our seminars. Every seminar is composed of business leaders from non competing businesses, so there's never any danger of revealing marketing concepts to your competition. In fact, the cross-pollination that occurs from learning about the marketing approach deployed by other industries is often a valued reason for attending. We will also spend time with you one-on-one to educate you about the benefits of personalized marketing without putting any sales pressure on you.
  5. What's the difference between segmentation and 1-to-1 marketing?Go To Top Of Page
Segmentation refers to the process of categorizing customers into similar groups. 1-to-1 marketing does away with groups and speaks to each customer individually. Combining both methods is possible and often desirable.
  6. Does 1-to-1 marketing always succeed?Go To Top Of Page
No. There are instances where the pool of targets is too small relative to the value of the product or service being sold. And of course, a campaign that is not well designed and thought out may not yield the results desired. These, and other qualifiers, are things that we examine when discussing the appropriateness of 1-to-1 marketing as a solution for you.

Data

  1. What data formats do you accept?Go To Top Of Page
We haven't been stumped yet. Delimited text, Excel, Access and DBF are all acceptable.
  2. Where does the data for personalized marketing come from?Go To Top Of Page
Data can be mined from existing records, purchased from list brokers, collected online, gathered at events, etc. We can help you make the most from different sources and even combine multiple sources.
  3. How much data is publicly available?Go To Top Of Page
More than most people ever imagined. We work with list brokers and primary data collection services. Whether you need to buy a list or build a data-collection methodology, we can help.
  4. What is data hygiene?Go To Top Of Page
The terms "data hygiene," "data scrubbing" and "data cleanup" pertain to a set of procedures for keeping a database with names and addresses up to date. This involves ensuring the database does not contain duplicate records and maintaining addresses in the USPS standard format. Depending upon the particular needs of the customer, the data-hygiene procedures might also include querying the USPS National Change of Address (NCOA) database to determine if any of the individuals or companies in the database have relocated and updating the database with new addresses as needed. Also, this will ensure that each address in the database is indeed a valid address to which the USPS can deliver mail. Data hygiene is essential in order to comply with the USPS's ever-changing regulations, i.e., Move Update.
  5. Do you have any database tidbits?Go To Top Of Page
    "Garbage In, Garbage Out"
Garbage is incomplete information, invalid information or duplicate records. If you leave in duplicate records, you are paying twice.

  6. Isn't some data mining an invasion of privacy?Go To Top Of Page
Keiger Direct is always careful to use data in appropriate, legal and ethical ways. In most instances, gray areas can be avoided with a little planning and forethought. We are well versed in the requirements of HIPPA, Sarbanes-Oxley and Gramm-Leach-Bliley.

Prepress and Design

  1. What file formats do you accept?Go To Top Of Page
Pretty much everything! For layout, this includes all of the components of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat), QuarkXpress, Adobe PageMaker and most flavors of PDF. We also offer limited support for Microsoft products including Office, Publisher and PowerPoint. In most cases, our working file platform is InDesign and files in any other format will be ported over to InDesign. For data, we accept Excel, Access, DBF and delimited text. Call us about other file formats.
  2. Which design applications can be used to create a 1-to-1 project?Go To Top Of Page
When designing for 1-to-1 variable projects, we recommend using Adobe InDesign. If Quark layouts are used they will be ported into InDesign; however, because of the complexity of most variable layouts, this may not be a seamless process. To create the leanest file possible, images should be flattened before placement, but please send layered art and fonts with your files as well.
  3. Are there things when I design that could affect print production of the piece?Go To Top Of Page
Yes. Drop shadows, transparency (which includes blending modes and opacity), drop shadows on variable text, and feathering can all affect print production time. The above items can be used but need to be used in small quantities. Using any of the effects above will affect processing time; however, using large portions and combinations of the above items can dramatically slow processing time. If you are going to use transparency, drop shadows and blending modes, they need to be done in Photoshop if possible. Please limit creating the above in InDesign.
  4. When I order a variable print job, what do I need to send to Keiger Direct?Go To Top Of Page
The best thing is to send all native files, just in case we need to make edits. Any layered image files, PDFs, document files and fonts should be sent.
  5. How do I send my files to you?Go To Top Of Page
The best way to send us your files is to use our eCommerce site to upload your files. However, you can also burn a disk with all the files, fonts and images. If the files are small enough they can be emailed; however, this option is not recommended in most cases.
  6. What is copyfitting?Go To Top Of Page
Copyfitting is the process of ensuring that a block of text, such a name or address, isn't too long or too short to fit the space allotted for it in a document.
  7. What is image personalization?Go To Top Of Page
Image personalization is the ability to add variable text to images dynamically; for instance, you can write a name in the sand or spell the name out with flowers, candy, tennis balls and more. This allows for the design and production of engaging direct-mail pieces that capture the attention of customers through a combination of personalization and feeling.
  8. Why don't printed colors match what I see on the monitor?Go To Top Of Page
It is almost impossible to replicate the colors you see on screen with those in print. They are two entirely different media. The screen displays colors according to transmitted light in the RGB (red, green, blue) gamut; the paper displays colors according to the absorption & reflection of light of CMYK colors (cyan, magenta, yellow and black).

Printing and Production

  1. What is on demand printing?Go To Top Of Page
On demand printing is a form of inventory management and pertains to printing documents only when needed instead of doing a large print run and warehousing the extras until required. The Keiger Direct On Demand printing and fulfillment system is part of Direct on Demand.
  2. What is print optimization?Go To Top Of Page
The term "print optimization" is often used pertaining to software and printers and RIPs that are designed specifically for variable-data printing (VDP). It refers to a paradigm that is based on isolating the text and graphics that will be the same on each document in a print run from the text and graphics that will be different on each document in that print run. It also allows the RIP to process the text code and graphics that will be the same on each document ONLY ONE TIME – as opposed to forcing the RIP to process that code over and over, once for each document in the print run.
  3. Do you have any suggestions that will help print production of the piece?Go To Top Of Page
Use images that are the final resolution, size, rotation, etc. When saving Photoshop TIFFs, do not use LZW compression. Make the leanest endfile possible. Do not use JPEGs! In Illustrator, if the file has transparency or other effects, do not save the file as an .eps. Either place the Illustrator file or save the file as a PDF (version 5 or higher). If a piece has text that will be variable, the text MUST be created in InDesign. Do not use the Paper Swatch as a fill color; instead, click on the Black swatch (not Registration) and make it 0% or create a new swatch of 0% black. Black should be 100% K; please do not create "Rich Blacks." Do not using "Facing Pages" in the Page Setup window.
  4. What is VPS?Go To Top Of Page
VPS stands for Variable Print Specification. VPS is a printer language for describing full-color variable-data print jobs. The great thing about VPS is its ability to specify which elements of a variable-data print job will be repeated from page to page. This allows variable-data print jobs to print at or near rated speed on a printer or digital press with a RIP that is capable of understanding VPS, as it is possible to reduce or eliminate the need to download the same data to the printer or digital press and RIP it multiple times during the same print job.
  5. Can Keiger Direct print on plastic?Go To Top Of Page
Yes. Our press does a great job on many synthetic substrates. We can also print on labels (both plastic and paper), waterproof paper, etc.
  6. Is digital printing less expensive?Go To Top Of Page
For many copies of the same piece, conventional printing is less expensive. For shorter runs, digital printing is less expensive. Printing with variable elements can only be accomplished with digital printing. We'll guide you to the most cost-effective process.
  7. Is all digital printing the same?Go To Top Of Page
No. Our Xerox iGen4 Digital Production Press allows us to print on the largest cut sheet size of any direct digital printing equipment. Special technology allows us to print on an almost unlimited variety of paper and synthetic media, including heavily textured paper stocks and vinyl. Our equipment is color calibrated to GRACoL standards, the same industry standard that our offset presses are calibrated to.
  8. What's the difference between offset and digital printing?Go To Top Of Page
Offset printing is where the inked image is transferred from a plate to a rubber blanket, then to the printing surface. Digital printing is the reproduction of digital images on a physical surface. It is a direct process, much like printing a file to your desktop printer, where the files are sent directly to the printer. With the Xerox iGen4 Digital Production Press we can calibrate to print to the same GRACoL settings as for an offset press. In fact, it is hard to discern a difference in color between offset and digitally printed pieces.

Mailing

  1. Does Keiger Direct offer mailing services? Go To Top Of Page
Yes. We can provide you with turnkey mailing services.
  2. What is mailpiece design?Go To Top Of Page
Mailpiece design is the process of laying out the indicia, text (name, address, etc.), the USPS barcodes and the other printed elements on an envelope, postcard or label. The USPS has strict rules that dictate how to lay out an envelope, postcard or label. At Keiger Direct, our knowledge of the USPS mailpiece design requirements is always current.
  3. What are Business Reply envelopes/postcards/labels and Courtesy Reply envelopes/postcards?Go To Top Of Page
Business Reply envelopes, postcards or labels are pre-addressed, specially formatted, usually barcoded envelopes, postcards or labels that enable a business to pay the postage for mail received from its customers. The USPS refers to a Business Reply envelope or postcard as a (BRM) Business Reply Mailpiece. A Courtesy Reply envelope/postcard (CRM) is similar to a Business Reply Mailpiece in that it is also a pre-addressed, specially formatted, barcoded envelope or postcard that a business provides to its customers as a convenience. Unlike a Business Reply Mailpiece, however, a Courtesy Reply Mailpiece requires postage at the time it is mailed.
  4. How do I qualify for Nonprofit postage rates?Go To Top Of Page
To qualify, your company or organization must meet the Internal Revenue Service Nonprofit standards as a 501(C)(3) or 501(C)(4). Keiger Direct is happy to assist you in filling out the appropriate USPS forms.
  5. What is NCOA?Go To Top Of Page
NCOA stands for National Change of Address. Over 40 million Americans change their address annually, which creates formidable obstacles in maintaining a high-quality mailing list.

    Benefits offered by performing NCOA:
    1. Allows user to send presorted mail, dramatically reducing postage.
    2. Reduces undeliverable mail by providing the most current address information for matches made to the NCOA file.
    3. Prevents remailings after address corrections are received because the address correction is applied prior to the mailing.
    4. Reduces mailer costs by reducing the number of undeliverable mailpieces by using most current address information.
    5. Provides the opportunity for faster productand service marketing through accurate mail delivery.

  6. What is CASS?Go To Top Of Page
CASS stands for Coding Accuracy Support System. The term CASS is widely used by the USPS when referring to the verification status of an address list. In order for an address list to receive CASS certification, the list must be checked against the USPS Address Matching System (AMS) CD-ROM, a match must be found for each address, and the correct 11-digit Delivery Point ZIP code and corresponding barcode must be added. Only addresses with the Delivery Point ZIP code and barcode are eligible for automation bulk mailing rates. CASS is particularly important to mailers because of the difference between "automation" and "non automation" mailing rates, which is about five cents per piece.
  7. What is Move Update?Go To Top Of Page
Since July 1997, the USPS has required that all addresses on mailings receiving discounts for First-Class Mail service, whether presorted or automation, undergo name and address correction through a process known as "Move Update." Currently this action is required within 90 days of mailing. The USPS offers mailers four approved and two alternative Move Update methods.

Mailers can meet the Move Update requirement in the following five ways:
    1. Ancillary Service Endorsement - "or Current Resident" following the recipients name
    2. Address Change Service (ACS)
    3. National Change of Address Linkage (NCOA Link™) System
    4. FASTforward®
    5. Alternative Move Update Methods (Legal Restraint or 99 Percent Accurate)

A mailer wishing to enter mail at a discounted First-Class Mail rate must certify, on the postage statement submitted, that the names and addresses on each mail piece have been updated within the previous 90 days. Keiger Directs knowledge of the USPS requirements is always current. We would be happy to have a conversation with anyone regarding mailing, data and compliance issues and make our local USPS resources available upon request. We will also supply all relevant forms needed to comply with the Move Update Program of the USPS.
  8. What is an Intelligent Mail Barcode?Go To Top Of Page
The Intelligent Mail Barcode is a 65 character barcode that can be affixed to mail in the United States. The reasoning behind the Intelligent Mail Barcode is that it can be used to track mail after it has been sent. It replaces the POSTNET and PLANET barcodes and promises to raise the level of service the USPS provides. Use of the Intelligent Mail Barcode will help the USPS improve mail deliverability, provide new service and increase its overall efficiency. The Intelligent Mail Barcode is also referred to as OneCode, IMB and the 4 State Barcode.
  9. What is POSTNET Barcode?Go To Top Of Page
POSTNET Barcode stands for Postal Numeric Encoding Technique. POSTNET is the type of barcode that is used to encode ZIP code information on mail within the United States. POSTNET barcodes are used by the USPS to assist in directing mail. The USPS automated processing equipment reads the POSTNET barcode on a letter, postcard, mailer, etc. and automatically sends the mail to the proper location in the mail processing facility. The USPS developed a new barcode format called the Intelligent Mail Barcode that functions as a replacement for both the POSTNET and PLANET barcodes. According to new USPS requirements, beginning in May 2009, mailers must stop using the POSTNET and PLANET barcodes and start using Intelligent Mail Barcodes instead. Keiger Direct maintains current knowledge of the USPS requirements. Keiger Direct maintains current knowledge of the USPS requirements.
